We recognize that understanding between countries requires communication. In every country, the national security and the economy play key roles in decision-making. We developed three philanthropic programs to improve relations between the United States and China on these two issues.
Summer Palace Dialogue
The Summer Palace program brings leading senior economists from both the United States and China together to discuss concerns about the economy. Red Bison Advisory Group organizes these forums to develop long-term friendships, understanding and on-going dialogue about economic cooperation and collaboration.
Adm. Owens founded the Summer Palace Dialogue in 2009 with the leaders of the Economist 50 Forum, the most prestigious group of economists in China operating at very high levels of government and business. The dialogue is fostered solely by Owens and continues to bring the most promising economists of the United States and China together.
EastWest Institute & Sanya
The EastWest Institute (EWI) brings retired American and Chinese flag officers together as part of its ongoing efforts to promote strategic trust between the United States and China. The current Track 2 dialogue—the United States-China Sanya Initiative—focuses on discussion of common strategic challenges in the bilateral military-to-military relationship.
Participants include former leaders of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, a former deputy chief of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff and retired force commanders from both countries. EWI organized in partnership with the China Association of International Friendly Contact (CAIFC) and was established in 2008 by a former Vice Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral William A. Owens, who currently serves on EWI’s board of directors.
The Sanya Initiative has fostered frank and open discussions on vital issues of concern, including Taiwan, cyber security, the rebalancing to Asia, developments on the Korean peninsula, and maritime disputes in the South and East China Seas. The results of these discussions have been relayed to policymakers at the highest levels in both the United States and China.
